The Hickory Creek Wilderness Trail is a 21km trail that I won't taking in full this year, but perhaps in a future year. For now, I'm going to peek in a bit, and take a listen.

[00:00:00] So I'm at the Hickory Creek Wilderness Area and I'm going to check out part of the trail,
[00:00:13] realizing by looking at the combination of the map and the length posted I did not have
[00:00:19] the time nor the energy to hike the entire loop. Maybe I can make it to where the loop
[00:00:29] actually starts and back we'll see it is a 12 mile loop which is quite something.
[00:00:35] That might be fun to do another day. I don't even know if I've ever done a 12 mile
[00:00:48] loop before. So according to the trail notes here there's historical archeological remnants
[00:01:09] here, and ancient ruins, and bears. So I'm going to be careful not to be too quiet. Maybe
[00:01:23] everyone's going around a little while I'm going to need to stomp around or something.
[00:01:38] My name is Rob and this is Songbirding.
[00:01:59] The mountain here is covered in ferns. It's all fern, which is really interesting looking.
[00:02:17] Now it's afternoon. They don't expect a whole lot in the afternoon. So I'm going to hike
[00:02:26] for a little bit and see what we get.
[00:02:42] I've been quite a few times where I have gotten some really good recordings the afternoon
[00:02:51] nice and clear because overwhelming amount of birds on it at the time. So you can catch individual birds
[00:03:02] singing a bit more cleanly. Ah here we go. Something a little new for my trip here.
[00:03:15] Meister and Woodpey coming up ahead. So hopefully here at Morgan. Notice the lake and patches on
[00:03:29] the trees here are bigger than I'm used to seeing. Not maybe have a slightly longer growing season.
[00:03:44] I'm used to Woodpey coming up here.
[00:04:03] He actually sounds a little more abbreviated than I'm used to hearing. I don't know if it's
[00:04:18] a regional thing or just an individual group.
[00:04:27] This is a very quiet place.
[00:05:28] There we go.
[00:05:36] The Hermit Thrusher is going quiet. That's what we're hearing coming up on it here.
[00:06:06] There we go.
[00:07:06] I'll have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher in Eastern Woodpey.
[00:07:36] I'm going to have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher.
[00:07:55] I'm going to have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher.
[00:08:25] What's that?
[00:08:55] I'm hearing something interesting. I don't know what it is.
[00:09:13] It's a nice song to me.
[00:09:25] It could be a scarlet manager.
[00:09:55] I'm going to have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher.
[00:10:25] I've heard it all of the grass.
[00:10:55] I'm going to have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher.
[00:11:25] You're going to look up on our teenager.
[00:11:55] I'm unfamiliar with this bird.
[00:12:05] I might have to see if I can find somebody to see it.
[00:12:35] It does sound like a scarlet manager.
[00:12:53] Merlin has no idea.
[00:13:02] I hope it will move around.
[00:13:14] I can see what this is.
[00:13:32] That was fascinating.
[00:13:37] I'm going to get back on the trail and continue the run.
[00:13:51] I'm going to have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher.
[00:14:02] I'm going to have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher.
[00:14:20] I'm going to have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher.
[00:14:50] I'm going to have to go to the recorder for the Hermit Thrusher.
[00:15:21] This is a really neat view.
[00:15:30] There's a hydro line going right through the forest here in cable.
[00:15:41] It's not even...
[00:15:44] There's lots of high voltage wire stuff.
[00:15:47] This is just a simple two wire one cable line going through the forest.
[00:15:53] It's not even that much power.
[00:16:02] Interesting to see so many trees cut down just for such a small amount of power
[00:16:08] to end up being wired through.
[00:16:16] I'm sure someday they're going to have to change it and add five more wires or something.
[00:16:38] As much as it's too bad that they cut a line through the forest like this,
[00:16:42] it actually allows you to kind of see the entirety of the forest around here.
[00:16:48] Because now there's no trees blocking the way down to the valley
[00:16:55] and then back up on the other side.
[00:17:08] Now I'm at Hickory Creek Wilderness Area officially.
[00:17:25] If I put a green marker
[00:17:32] here.
[00:17:51] Years later I still don't know with absolute certainty what species this song was from.
[00:17:58] But I now strongly suspect it was an eastern Toei.
[00:18:03] See the notes in the Ebert checklist in the episode notes for my reasoning behind this.
