For the next few episodes we’ll be exploring one of my favourite birding hikes yet — the Minister Creek Trail.
I came to this trail knowing nearly nothing about it, and yet seem to have found the perfect time to explore it — in early June when the rhododendrons are blooming and birdsong is in abundance.

[00:00:09] So I'm at Minister Creek Hiking Trail, just in the parking lot right now. I can hear some deer huffing.
[00:00:32] A colonnial throat, chestnut-side warpler, a blackburnian. I was hearing earlier Northern Perula here somewhere.
[00:01:12] Oh, there we go. That was a Northern Perula. Let's see if I can find it. There we go.
[00:01:29] Zzzzzz-zeet! Northern Perula. He's on the move.
[00:01:45] You can hear in the background Minister Creek. More blackburnian warblers here too. Oh, Northern Perula moved again.
[00:02:14] Got a sapsucker nearby me here, female. Common yellow throat. American goldfincher here too, and American robin.
[00:02:55] There's an American red star here too. Common yellow throat.
[00:03:21] For the next few episodes, we'll be exploring one of my favorite birding hikes yet, the Minister Creek Trail. Alright, I'm going to get myself onto the trail. I came to this trail knowing nearly nothing about it, and yet seem to have found the perfect time to explore it, in early June when the rhododendrons are blooming and birdsong is in abundance.
[00:04:03] My name is Rob, and this is Songbirding.
[00:04:31] Alright, so this trail starts without the hill climb immediately. It seems to land on a grade here, where old rail line, old road, something like that. Lots of blackburnian warblers.
[00:05:10] A distant magnolia warbler. A lot of red-eyed vireos. For a little bit ahead of Scarlet Tanager too.
[00:05:52] Coming up on a blue-headed vireo. More sweet sounding than the red-eyes. A little more intense in their volume too. Well, they do ramble on a bit. It's a lot more spaced out.
[00:06:24] There's a lot of beer-beer bees. We got a black-throated blue warbler here somewhere.
[00:07:27] Oh, the wah calls from red-eyed vireos. Kind of a nasal wah. Magnolia warbler. And blackburnian.
[00:08:29] Yeah, I think I've... Maybe you got a black-throated blue up here? We'll check.
[00:08:58] Old spring running through here. We got a black-throated blue warbler here.
[00:09:41] There's going to be a bunch of virees calling. There's our black-throated blue warbler. Beer, beer, beer, beer, bees.
[00:11:53] Ovenbird. With the teacher, teacher, teacher, teacher song. Oh, I think I heard a belted kingfisher. Yeah. That rattle. Da-da-da-da. Scarlet Tanager and Ovenbird.
[00:12:42] I think the song of a veer here. Kind of a veer, veer, veer, veer, veer. And a blue jay.
[00:14:29] Blue jay.
[00:15:00] Ovenbird.
[00:16:53] It's going to be a nice blue-headed vireo. Alvinbird. Magnolia warbler. And a distant rose-breast gross beak singing. Blue jay. Heh. Squeaked of a sapsucker.
[00:18:42] Quite a bit going on here this morning. So I'm taking the middle loop here.
[00:19:08] It should bring me by at least one overlook point. I'll take a look at the map and see how I feel about others. Two-mile loop.
[00:19:57] Here's the wah from a red-eyed veria. And they decided to stop as I said that. Heh heh heh. Hearing some cedar wax wings up there.
[00:20:27] Way up high. Oh, they're black, they're blue.
